Algae Control

Algae... the nemesis. An unsightly green mot that quickly spreads over aquariums, algae can be a huge problem and not easily remedied. The key is stopping it before it starts. Here is a list of useful tips to algae control:

-Make a routine of cleaning the aquarium glass, whether algae can be seen or not.

-Algae-eating fish and snails can be useful, although sometimes they seem to have no effect at all.

-Live plants compete with algae for nutrients Some plants are even resistant to being covered in algae, which can be very beneficial.

-Lighting can be a problem too, such as too much artificial or sunlight entering the aquarium. Shading or relocation might be necessary.

-Chemicals seem to have more harmful effects than good. In severe cases, such as not maintaining an aquarium for a long time, chemicals can be added to speed up the process of removing large amounts of algae. As a whole, chemicals should not be used because of the harmful effects it can have on fish and other livestock.

Combining these different tricks should keep the aquarium very clean, with the biggest tool being preemptive strikes on the algae before it can invade all aspects of the tank.
