Keyhole Cichlid
Cleithracara maronii

Information

Perhaps the most peaceful and curious of the smaller cichlids, there are a multitude of reasons to keep Keyhole Cichlids. Driftwood is the key to opening these cichlids up. They enjoy swimming around a fine piece of driftwood, changing colors to blend into it and basing their community around this cornerstone (or corner-wood). Once they know their keeper long enough, they will eagerly come out, although slight movements are still enough to frighten them. Feistier fish are not a problem as long as they are smaller, then Keyholes have no problem is swatting the fish with a caudal fin and standing their ground. Amongst each other there can be occasional squabbles among the driftwood, but nothing too seriously as they are cichlids and these behaviors can be expected once and a while. Keyhole Cichlids enjoy keeping to themselves, but clearly enjoy the company of others. New fish are a great source of interest as the keyholes will emerge from hiding to investigate the newbie, sometimes scaring the new fish into thinking it's prey. Feeding time is especially fun as these fish enjoy to sit at the top and beg for treats.
