My Experience
(summary of my own keeping)
Crabs may look menacing,
and if you mess with this one too much you may get
pinched, but red clawed crabs are as docile as any
other inhabitant in a community tank. A few things
to consider are how to construct a proper home for
these creatures. They prefer an area above water to
rest, as well as a pinch of sea salt. The pinch of
salt isn't necessary, and neither is the above water
rest stop, but they are certainly helpful as some
fish may pick on the crab and it will need a place
above water to hide or acclimating to a new aquarium
could be stressful and salt could help.
Overall, watching these
crabs scuttle across the bottom is enjoyable. They
will put anything on the aquarium substrate in their
mouths, so again be aware of the environment. Small,
slow fish could become targets to a hungry crab, but
this doesn't happen too often, if ever. Red clawed
crabs are well worth trying, despite any
apprehensions.
