Siamese Fighting Fish
Betta splendens

Information

Although they are called "Fighting Fish," don't let the name fool you. The ornamental varieties often seen at pet shops are usually the targets of attacks rather than the antagonists. Their long fins can be nipped clean within no time at all since the ornamental varieties tend to be slow in movement and long fins are an attractive biting surface for other fish. Where these fish do get the "Fighting Fish" brand is when males are placed together. Males will fight to the death, ripping each other's flesh and causing quite a mess. Putting two males in separate containers and watching them show their fins to the other is quite a treat though (putting your face close to the tank and puffing your cheeks can have the same affect on the fish). Males will flare their fins and gills, creating a vivid display of color and intimidation; It's a very beautiful sight. Females lack the long fins and can be placed together in community tanks and are the better choice for community aquariums than males.
